I have looked around at the 2nd generation 4Runners and found a pretty darn clean one owner with engine troubles. I'm pretty sure the deal I got will allow me to drop in a remanufactured engine and still be under blue book! The engine was still running and enable me to get the the 4Runner home but it had the cooling problem possibly linked to the head gasket recall! I have not done the check to see if it qualifies for the campaign, the truck has 192K. I will call the local dealer to check on that. I was wondering if there is a possibility of an easy swap on a more powerful engine, and if so, what about the trans? I am generally a stock vehicle type person, but what the heck! I was qouted $2,200 for a 5year warranted 3.0L Remanufactured engine installed. The shop recommended I change out the "knock sensor?" Any and all feedback to help me make a decision would be great! Thanks, Coilsplitter in Southern CA

I was reading a website yesterday that said you can swap a M series motor in to these for less then the average cost of upgrading the stock engines and you will get a lot better performance. I am a supra fanatic and can attest to these engines being really well made. IIRC they were standard in the land cruisers in the early eighties. They are good truck engines; lots of torque very wide powerband and bulletproof. There is quite a bit of info on the net if you are interested. You could import a 6MGE that will give y ou an easy 200hp and should bolt right up to your tranny or any other 4runner tranny for that matter. I don?t know why toyota didn?t make them an option for trucks in North America but they are probably one of the best toy ever made. Easily just as much work as swapping in a v6. Here are two. One is a 5M swap and is really straight forward the other the guy has taken a 7mgte and is probably pushing over 400HP with real tall tires. Don?t think that your drive train can?t handle a stock 7mgte cause it can, it will have trouble with 400-500HP but that is on the extreme anyway. http://home.4x4wire.com/caz/trucks/85runner/ http://www.yotapower.com/4runner/7mswap.htm Sean Rauch 85 Supra 5M (7M soon) Cone Filter, Exhaust, Cold Air Scoop Winnipeg, Canada > >
