Today I start my normally well-functioning Camry and my check engine and "lights" light came on. The car was sputtering and barely staying running and as soon as I gave it gas it died. (Of course). I repeated this. Then the last time I thought about the "lights" light. My car has a failsafe that turns the headlights off if you leave them on when you open the door and my overhead light doesn't work. My Camry is a wagon and also has a light in the back for the hatch so I started to get out to check the hatch, but then I realized that if that light had been on all night and ran the battery down that the car wouldn't have started at all. I shut my door and crank the car and MAGICALLY it runs.
This isn't the first time this car has pulled these kind of shenanigans, so I just go with it.
Tonight when I got off work it did this again sans the "lights" light coming on. After it dying once I managed to get it running. I had to make a stop on the way home and as I was pulling into the parking lot the check engine light came on again. I parked it and gave it some gas to see if it would die again and it mildly backfired. Then when I got home and put it in park the lights came on saying it was in park AND reverse.
It's a 1987 Camry Wagon, 2.0L 4 cylinder. Fuel injected. It has a slight oil leak (maybe, I put in some stop leak a few days ago and haven't checked again). And a leak in the muffler. Otherwise, there are no problems. It had a tune up in March so I doubt it is the plugs and/or wires.
Could this be a problem with the muffler and exhaust or is this a fuel injector nightmare?
