ok heres the deal i have a 2001 celica gt with a izzfe 1.8L engine. mods that would effect engine proformance are a cold air kit (with redone ecu) and a magnaflow exhaust recently added. the car is a standard trans. the other day i was driveing home and raced a mustang. due to many suspension mods i was able to keep him in sight however when i came to a stop i head a noise that was new to me. so i pulled over and opened the hood. the engine has a internal knock that sounds like a click. it gets louder as it rev's up. so i drove home and parked it. came to find that it has basically zero oil. so oil was added however click/knock stayed. oil light and check engine light never came on! i was told it was problly my head gasket but there is no visual leaks even with car running. exhaust is clear so no signs its burning oil. so idk where the oil is but new oil stayed. also i checked the coolant and no oil there either. someone also said a piston might have cracked so i pulled plug wires one at a time and was sure to find all cylinders fired. the noise is 100% inside the engine and idk what to expect from here. feel free to post possibilties. car runs ok and drives the same almost no power difference. but click/knock sounds are loudly heard.

could be rod knock, or the 1zz is notorious for having valve train noise if run low on oil my suggestion is to pull the oil pan and check for metal in pan. If no metal pull valve cover and check for scaring on cam lobes.

I basically did the same as you with a 2003 Matrix and same engine and am going through the pains now. It started when I switched to synthetic and got into a road rage with a van on the interstate. Next day heard the same knock you describe. At 120k miles it has never used oil and a view of the stick showed it was possibly out or very low. Oil change resulted in about 2 of 5 quarts and the oil light never came on. The engine light had been on for some time and the dealer said for $1200 they could change the cat with no promises it would work so I let it go. On this issue some mechanics said it sounded like the timing chain tension glide which is plastic coated metal and it was probably broke. Tomorrow I will get the cat replaced ($170) in hopes the back pressure is causing the noise. If this doesn't work then the timing which is estimated at $855. Also you may be interested to know the engine was also sounding like a diesel and I found on the net the water pump can cause this. I replaced the pump myself which is easy after removing belt and alternator and the engine is quiet like new except for this internal knock.

you might need to reset your engine back to base timing,, do you have a subscription to "all data " it is a on line "car specific" manual that you have to pay 16$ u.s. it will show you all you need to know about your specific year car. but back to base timing. it might have been thrown of with your meeger attampt to keep up with 8 cylinders,"not a really good idea". anyway , disconnect your battery for about 3 minutes and then re-connect it. but then you have to drive the car for about twenty minutes around town and then on the freeway for about say ten minutes. the will help the ecu to re-learn the engine parameters, plus you might have to replace your knock sensor. someone said something about "rods" there are no rods in you engine.if it is a 1zz-fe engine all you have are 2 cams and buckets between the valve and cam lobes. but you might want to check out your valve springs one or some of them might be broken. if so you might have even worse a problem. since the springs might be broken you could have the valves slapping the top of your pistons, because now the are drropping too far down the cylinder. that means BIG MONEY ENGINE REPLACEMENT,..... sorry.

i am currently going to fresno city college to be a smog tech. i have a 3.7 g.p.a. i will be graduating in march i have three b's and seven a's for grades so far. as for my celica , since the day i bought it , the car has given me nothing but JOY. i get about 450 mph on a tank of gas on the highway and about 365 miles per tank in city driving. i'm equally amazed by the gas milage because when i am not at school i drive for a local pizza shop. last year i hit some deep water and filled my #1 cylinder with water and hydrauliced the cylinder and snapped a connecting rod without alot of time and money it took me a year to fix it. but know it runs like a champ and still giving me nothing but joy. recently the california air resourses board"c.a.r.b." has let me and others go out and get aftermarket cats. i will be recieving mine in the mail asa soon as monday. i paid a little more for mine as it is a direct fit cat"485.00$, yes ouch! but know i can get my baby legal on the road. other than tis mishap all i had ever had to replace was the mass air sensor and a battery. but i wich the gts had an all wheel drive option that would've been too cool.
