My wifes '07 Corolla S was getting a consistant 36-38 mpg on the highway since buying it in May, now it gets 28. I talked to our Toyota service guy and he said that it is normal for the mileage to drop in the winter. I could see a little drop maybe, but not 25%! The mileage hasn't changed a bit in our other vehicles, but of course they are Fords. What is everyone else getting this time of year?? Its an automatic.

Winter does make quite a difference, especially for engines with small displacement (1.8L). If you want better fuel economy for all four seasons, I would personally recommend a K&N drop-in air filter. (Heres the link if you would like: K&N link). I put one in my 99 corolla and immediately noticed an increase in acceleration, and soon noticed a small increase in fuel economy. (1-2mpg).

To get back on topic, my car also burns a lot more gas than it does in the warmer seasons. Usually due to the ECU running the engine at a more rich fuel mixture, especially when the car has been parked outside in the cold all night. You can also put in some fuel line water remover or fuel injector cleaners, which should help a little bit (prices are usually a few bucks).

Hope I helped :D

I get about the same but I am heavy on the pedal.

I have yet to test the Corolla mid summer, but I suspect its much lower than expected.

I had a 2001 Civic before this 2008 Corolla and found it to be much better on fuel (although they are rated the same).

The Corolla is a line of subcompact/compact cars produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota, which has become very popular throughout the world since the nameplate was first introduced in 1966. In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling nameplate in the world, with over 35 million sold as of 2007.[1] Over the past 40 years, one Corolla car has been sold on average every 40 seconds.[2] The modern Corolla shares only the name with the first generation car, as the series has undergone several major redesigns.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using the name Crown for their primary models, e.g. the Corona, which is Latin for crown, or the Corolla, which is Latin for small crown and Camry which is an Anglicized pronunciation of the Japanese term "kanmuri" meaning "crown".

Corollas are currently manufactured in Japan and in Brazil (Indaiatuba, São Paulo), Canada (Cambridge, Ontario), China (Tianjin), India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom (Derbyshire), the United States (Fremont, California) and Venezuela.

if she accelerates quick, if she turns her car on and off often, goes over 3k rpms when she is driving, that sometimes could be the reason of the milage loss. Oil changes and sometimes the gas she pumps in the car could be another factor due to the fact that some places carry gasoline that burn quick.

i have an '04 corolla S auto, i average about 39 in the summer and 28 to 32 in the winter. part of this is because of the warm up time for the engine, although when it is cold, you will get more power, it will also get less economy. I switched over from castrol GTX oil to Mobil 1 and increased averave MPG about 1, then wheni started using AMSoil, i am now up another 2 MPG from the mobil. i only ever ruina full synthetic which will have less resistance and better lubrication than conventional oil, it will, or at least should help increase economy but the downfall is the added price. an amsoil oil chjange with 5 qts and an amsoil filter runs me about $70 to change it myself, but amsoil oil change guidlines are every 25k miles or 24 months. I change mine every 15k miles. I also got an aftermarket muffler whichincreased my economy due to less restriction on the engine, the draw back is the added exhaust noise. I have yet to install an intake, but i am hoping to get up to at least 45 mpg and would love to break that 50 mpg mark with some computer tuning.
