Today I have had the pleasure of adding the 7th case of oil to my car in only 20,000 mile plus or minus a bit. I say this is a pleasure in jest and would really like to know why Toyota's 1.8 liter is so poorly made. If Toyota wants to maintain the high standards of Six Sigma or Baldridge or TQM then I would suggest that they redesign the engine, so that after 80,000 miles you don't need to own an oil well to keep oil in. The car is good except for this problem. 2000 1.8 liter engine owner.

So, there are no real mechanics out there to help unless I want to do body work like putting on a wing or fancy wheels. Sorry I thought that you guys are serious about helping. Maybe someday this will be a good forum, but for now it is just not for me. I'll check in to view the responses that this posting brings, but I doubt that I will find any help here.

I dont know man, my vvt-i has 310,000 kilometers on it, its a 1.8L like yours, i change my oil every 5,000 kilometers as recomended and i run synthetic in it. My car burns no oil and its a 95'. I dont think the 1.8 is a bad motor at all. your car probably needs a motor job perhaps from lack of maintenence, not to sound critical or anything

your probably ran it to hard when u first got it and fried out your piston rings a lil bit more than u should have. If you were running a certain type of oil and switched that may have had something to do with it to. cuz that can fry out your piston rings and cause the oil burn.

Actually I got the vehicle at 87000 miles, so I know that I did not drive it that hard. Oh well I guess I'll drive it until it dies. At least the pistons are lubed.
Thanks for the reply.

No offence taken as I said I got the car with 87000 miles on it so the damage was done befor my owing. I was hoping that maybe just a head rebuild would fix the burning. The shops all want to do a $150 test on it before they tell me what might be wrong. Yes, they will apply that to the bill , but I need to know before the fun begins. Money is tight and I would like to budget for it. Pay 150 out then budget the rest of the cost, that is difficult to do, but it may have to go that route.
Thank you and happy motoring.
P.S. I do like the car and it is fun to drive it is just that cross country would require me taking a case of oil with me.
