I have a 1981 Hiace 2.0L 4 speed manual column shift that jumps out of 2nd gear when foot off throttle.
What can be done to the gearbox.
Would teflon additives help?

Thicker tranny oil might help but I cant see how a teflon based additive would do anything. I had a simular problem w/ a VW. Thicker tranny oil along w/ keeping a hand on the stick while in that gear did the trick. Not a big deal unless you are 4x4ing.

Sounds like bearing problems.

My 83 Hiace (YH71) just spat a main bearing in the gearbox after exhibiting similar symptomns. Prepare for a gearbox replacement/overhaul.

Incidently, do you know the part number/type of your gearbox?

mine is full or nasty size chunks of metal and loose ball bearings lol.

Yup, it's a selector/bearing issue.

Time for another gearbox or an overhaul.
