Hi All!

Went to start my 87 Cressida this monring and the ignition is stuck in the lock position. It feels like the "lock/unlock" button on the steering wheel is stuck in the "unlocked" position and will not allow the key tu turn.

Anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

Cheers,
Steve

On the 1991 cressida a switch on the Transmission shifter console contols the key from being removed if not in park .. if this switch is bad you can't remove the key .....
the white plactic switch is on the right side of the shifter , on my 1991 . it is very easy to replace .. get one at the junk yard for 4 bucks or less.

Hope this helps , Bigvito

Of all the things !!!!!!!!

Now , my cressida is doing this !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crazyyyyyy !!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

First I need to lock the wheel . Then, I can move the wheel very (very)slow to the right, I can feel a SMALL point that the key will turn . For me it is after the wheel is locked about a inch or so to the right .

The key will not move if the wheel in NOT in the locked position to start doing the above .

I just got this car a week ago but before I could turn the key even if the wheel was locked or unlocked .

SO, disregard my reply about that switch on the shifter . That I think is so you can't move the key to the locked position if the car is in gear .

Was anyone very fixed this problem or had this problem before and what was the outcome ????
Thanks , Vito

Had the same problem 3 weeks ago . Thought I was going to have to take the ignition apart ,,, just before I was going to start I thought what the hell I,ll spray the hell out of it with WD40 ,, worked like a charm .

I was shocked it freed up so easily .

I sprayed into the keyhole and around the little button on top

All Toyota ignition switches are essentially the same. If any of the other suggestions don't help, try cutting a new key off of the old one. I have had some luck in the past with this approach. The sharper edges of the new key sometimes work the lock a little better. Otherwise, you may have to replace the whole assembly. Good luck, Colin.
