I am a newbie and hopefully I can describe my problem correctly. I have a 22re 1993 and when the truck is cold there is a hesitation/sluggishness when accelerating. It happens for a couple of seconds, and then while still depressing the gas pedal(almost to the floor) the truck WAKES up and runs normally. It happens only when accelerating and happens during 1st and 2nd gear leaving from a stop light. It has passed smog several times and has never broken down, but its rather annoying.

I have checked the diaphram on the egr valve works fine. I have replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter pcv valve, air filter all the maintenance items to see if it helped, and it did not.

Anyone with a similar problem please help. Someone who is farmiliar with toyotas that i know suggested to replace my vaccuum modulator, or something like that, and I just do not want to throw parts at my truck I want to know what the problem is and fix it right.

I also noticed when I open the gas cap air spews out from the tank like there is not breather or its plugged, i leave the cap screwed on but leav it loose to relieve the pressure. I have replaced the fuel cap thinking it might be plugged but it did not help.

I used to work for Cadillac and realize there might be a specialized problem here with my toyota, but im not sure

PLEASE HELP (IMG:style_emoticons/default/00000732.gif)

I have a 22R Carburated and it did the same thing for a while .. i did a quick clean with carburetor cleaner and turned the idle up just a tab and checked all my vacuum hoses for leaks .. don't do it that much anymore ... take a look at your float meter see if maybe your carb. needs cleaned if ya have one anyhow (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) If EFI can't help ya but tell ya to check for leaks in the vacuums or fuel lines. but good luck if i am any help

Mine does that a bit too. I figured it's just the EFI doing it's still. The computer says in a safe open loop mode until the engine gets up to operating temp. Once it's up to temp, it advances the timing and give you more power.

As for the gas cap issue, the evap system is pugged. Mine also has that same issue, but I have not got around to fix it.

Check the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) and/or the Manifold Absolute Sensor. (MAP)
