Therefore, I would seriously advise you to take the vehicle in for servicing. Airbags are not something anyone should tinker with, they are a safety device.
If the airbag light is on, and as you say its not related to the other lights coming on, then I would not want my daughter to purchase the car (to put this into perspective). Please take it for servicing.
On the "check-engine-light" thing, it sounds like your mechanic looked at the OBD II code reading that came from the PCM module and concluded a faulty sensor in your exhaust system. If your light is off (and he hasn't fixed anything) it's because you can reset your PCM (computer) and the problem is intermittent. I will bet you dollars to a Canadian Donut that your check light will come on again...soon.
If you're willing to invest in an OBD reader (approx $150) you can troubleshoot your engine 10 times easier in future.
But, in conclusion, please get your airbag system fixed.
