I have a 1995 Tercel that has 200,000 miles on it. My question is how many miles can I get out of this car? It runs well and doesn't use but a little oil. I have put some money into the car lately replacing the gas tank and getting new tires etc. , and I was thinking that I shouldn't be putting this much money into a car that has such high mileage. I am so impressed with the 40mpg that it gets and how reliable the car has been for me. If anybody has any estimates for how many miles you can get out of these motors, I would love to hear from you. I have had Toyota's in the past and sold them before they died, all had very high miles on them.

I currently drive a 92 paseo with 228,000 on it. I replaced the motor about 10,000 miles back, the other one simply wore out. My previous car was a 1991 tercel, I sold 2 yrs ago with 275,000 on it, and as far as I know it is still running. These motors will run a long time as long as you take care of them. My only suggestion is to add about 1/2 quart of the real thick lucas oil additive when you change the oil. It works great and if you burn a little oil it may stop it totally, if you burn a lot of oil, it will burn less.

I have a 1991 Tercel with 209,XXX on it. It burns a little oil so, I will try the Lucas oil treatment. Don't worry about putting the money into it, I just did tires, brakes, and alignment to mine. I hope to get to 250,000!!!

The biggest problem with the 3E(tercel) and the 5E (Paseo) engines are that the oil rings get gummed up and stick, then they dont wipe the oil off the cylinders, hence the oil burning.
I have performed many tear downs on these engines to find the oil rings seized. Most just need the cylinders deglazed and new TOYOTA rings installed. 9 times out of 10 the bearings are still good. After market rings have to much tension and will wear the cylinders.
My 93 Paseo has 300,000 km, runs like a top, burns 1 Litre of oil in about 400 miles. Im waiting till spring and some warmer weather to try some Z-MAX oil additive which is suppose to remove a lot of carbon deposits in the engine hopefully freeing up the oil rings, or it will be a new set of rings.

Garyg, you should not worry of this maintenance and little repairs. The fact you keep this car in order, makes you earn more than if you had a brand new car.
The decrease of the value of a brand new car is way more expensive than the maintenance of an old car like this Tercel.

How many years more ? Nobody will be able to answer you, because nobody can predict the future ; may be tomorrow, may be more ten years.
If you're happy with this 200000 miles car, that's the more important. You're maintaining it well, you feel confident in driving it, then keep it.
