As I'm driving, the fuel needle moves from 3/4 full to nearly empty and then a moment later it will move to 1/4. Behavior is erratic. Is this caused by the gauge itself or by a sensor? What would be the best approach to correcting this problem? My truck has 160k miles on it.

Put a new sending unit in it. That is the sensor in the tank that tells you how much gas you have
