My son has a 1997 Camry with a 2.2 engine. Lately it has started to idle really rough, and the exhaust smells exactly like a skunk. Last night, it broke down and the header was glowing cherry red. It would not start at all, sounded like it was in a bind when it was cranked over. Now it will start, but only runs a short time and dies, will not restart. And the exhaust still smells like a skunk, you can smell the car from 20 feet away. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much.

Is the CEL lit? Have you read any codes?

First guess, without a code readout, is a clogged cat. Measure the back pressure by drilling a small hole in the exhaust pipe upstream of the cat, which can be plugged with a sheet metal screw. Use a fuel pump pressure gauge.

Back pressure at 1000 RPM S/B less than 1 psi. If much greater, cat is clogged, and must be replaced.

I agree; sounds like a clogged cat. Unfortunately, the overheating may have caused some additonal problems, including a possible blown head gasket and/or burnt valves. You really should have have the car checked out by your mechanic. Good luck. Hy

Thanks so much, everyone, hopefully nothing is damaged by the overheating.
