Hey, I have a 1998 toyota tacoma pre-runner and can't get the check engine sign to turn off; I've checked the oil and water level and it's all good. Any idea on what I can do/check to fix this problem?

You need to have the codes pulled to see exactly what the problem is. You can usually borrow one from an autoparts store and when you get them read, post them up here and we can better help you out.

You can usually go to your nearest autoparts store and someone can help you borrow a code reader to get the codes pulled, they will usually help you get it done. Or, you can ask friends for a referral for a trusted mechanic to help you out.

I just had mine come on (engine light) and I took it in to my mechanic to pull the code ($20) and it was the o2 sensor as I had expected. The part (o2 sensor) was $180 and the labor $90 and the total after tax was like $290 something.

Try simple easy checks first. Yes, an O2 sensor can cause the check engine light to come on but so can little things like a loose gas cap or dirty air filter.

The gas cap could actually do it. I had never heard of that but it's true. When you tighten the cap make sure it clicks 3 times.

Hey there buddy..Were you able to solve your problems already? I've encountered same problems as yours and the local mechanic did a good job of fixing mine..

Two questions for my 2001 Prerunner:

1. A mechanic told us it would cost $400 to replace the O2 sensor. That price seems fairly high for what I have read in the forum. Is this a part you would recommend going to the salvage yard and installing yourself?

2. Would this sensor issue cause the truck to idle as if it were choking when at a stop?

I appreciate any feedback.

That is something that I would do myself because it is easy to get to. I would just be careful handling the sensors.
