Bought this great little car about a year ago - 2000 Corolla CE w/ manual transmission). Slight leak near transmission, appeared to be minor.

The car was shaking on highway over 60mph. This continued to worsen so my mechanic balanced the wheels. Still had the problem. So I replaced all 4 rims, and balanced. Still had the problem. Also then had them balanced at another shop to make sure it was done by two separate people. Same problem.

So mechanic told me that there was play where driveshaft went into transmission and fluid was leaking. This is most likely the cause of the shake he said. I could tell it was loose too, made sense since I had ruled out the wheels. So I blew $1500 for a new differential, clutch and right driveshaft.

The car still shakes! You can't get a 5 speed salvaged transmission for these cars for under $800 (automatics go for $250) because there are so many of them being replaced.

Now what I believe is this. There is a shake from somewhere else in the suspension, but that shake is what wore the bearings etc. in the differential and caused that problem. So, I"ve yet to locate the exact problem. I'd better fix it before dropping $1500 for another differential assembly!

My plan is to put the car on blocks this weekend, try swapping the wheels with totally separate wheels from my other car. If that doesn't work, see if there is play anywhere.

I have found numerous other postings of this particular problem. But no solutions. Has anyone gone through this and found a solution? Any ideas?

you may want to check the wheel bearing, ball joint control arm / bushings. you also might want check the strut assembly.

i also have the same problem with my 99 corolla automatic. i get a shake above 55-60. it gets real annoying. I have already changed the struts, three sets of rims & tires that were all balanced, axles, rotors & pads. I really wish I knew what the heck this problem is.

maybe your car just shouldn't go that fast...
try getting a nice sound system and chill out when you drive.

hi all,

I encounter the same problem, around 60mph, have any of you guys tried putting in a strut bar? I was thinking about getting one if it would solve the problem but I don't want to blow off some cash. Oh, and by the way I don't think its a wear problem, I recently bought this car (used, from CarMax) with only 53k on the clock. (It's also a 5 speed, so I don't think the tranny has anything to do with it either).

Thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
