hello. i am new to the forums. i was wondering if anyone knew what a good motor would be to swap in my 2001 celica gt. i am looking to put a motor in that would run me less than 2k because im only 18 and not a little rich boy. i was told i could probably put a scion tc motor in pretty easily. is there anything faster i could put in with a good bit of torc? or is the tc motor the best option for my price range.

you going to do the work yourself? does your budget include the engine mounts?

Instead of a swap, you could possibly just look to upgrade parts instead of an overhaul.

here's some mods that would increase performance that would fit into your budget -

lightweight pulley - $80 for AEM + labor

denso iridium spark plugs - $80 + labor

racing clutch + flywheel - $300 + labor

if you are intent on saving up for a motor, the 3sgte turbo is something I'd look at getting.

adding the pulley would increase your top end + acceleration but take away from your torque.

the 3sgte was/is the mr2 turbo engine and Celica GT4 Motor. I've seen it in action and it's a great building block to work with. With the proper modifications, you might get into the 11-12 sec quarter mile range.

here's a link that might help you out

torque is the bottom end power of your engine. All torque helps out with is the jump or trying to gain speed going uphill. It doesn't help with acceleration once your car is on the go already.

Conversely, a lightened flywheel and pulley system reduces your torque (the jump) but improves your acceleration once your car is already on the go.

here it is in drag racing terms - If your car has more torque than the other car, you will have the jump on him but having more torque means a lower RPM. Lower RPM does not improve acceleration on the top end.

Johnny,
Thanks for explaining that. I was wondering how that worked myself and now I get it. Thanks again.
