Has anyone heard of pre-mature A/C failures on Toyota products? I have a 2005 Tacoma (4 Cyl) and my A/C compressor seized up at 36,600 miles. The dealer wants $2,050 to fix it since I was over the 36,000 mile factory warranty.

I've been going between the dealer and Toyota and nobody has given me a break as of yet. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one with this problem.

Other than the A/C I like the truck. I don't think I'll give my dealer anymore money though.

Thanks

I also have a 2005 Tacoma, 2.4 FWD and the AC compressor failed at 25,000 miles. It was long out of warranty, but my dealer said they would do the repair for approx. $500. They said that Toyota would supply the parts and I would just have to pay the labor and recharge. I still think this is way to early to have a problem. I have owned more than 25 Toyotas and this is the first one to have a problem. I started buying Toyota in 1968 with a Corona. Since then the only real drawback to Toyota is rust. They have all been reliable and durable. I just hope Toyota isn't heading the way of Ford and GM. I had bad experiences with trucks from both manufacturers.

I have a 2005 Tacoma and I just found out today I have the same problem. My dealer wants $1800 to fix my AC compressor. They said the part only is $1400 and back logged in North America. Do you know if this a problems a lot of people are having? This is my third Toyota and second truck. My biggest repair on my old truck in 12 years was a CV joint that cost me around $300. This really sucks.

I figure to buy a new truck for $25000 and have a $2000 repair in four years there has to be something wrong with Toyota.

Has anyone found a better deal on an AC compressor?

Thanks,
Ken

I too have experienced the same A/C problem, the A/C compressor on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4WD Doublecab pickup failed at around 36,000 miles. When we recharged the system and leak checked it, the dye that we added was leaking out of every seal and seam on the A/C compressor, were talking catastrophic failure. Because the Toyota warranty had expired (3yr/36kmi) by about 3 months, Toyota would only fix it if I was going to pay the for the complete repair (parts and labor). To add insult to injury, the company that provided the aftermarket extended warranty that they sold me for about $1,300 when I purchased the vehicle filed chapter 11 bankruptcy a year or so ago, so needless to say, my truck now has 4-65 air conditioning - roll down the 4 windows and drive 65mph!!!

Unfortunately, that is not the only problem that I have had with the truck - I have had the front brakes serviced twice already in 40k miles, the most recent the dealer wanted close to $1,000 to replace both front calipers that were totally seized, both rotors, and pads. I did the work myself for $400 in parts and a little elbow grease.

And last week the alternator seized up and when I started the engine it burned up and shredded the serpentine belt, I just finished installing a re-manufactured Denso alternator that I bought online for $200 (local parts stores wanted $440 and up for an aftermarket reman part).

The truck is now a little over 4 years old (purchased new, April of 2005) and the frame, undercarriage, and engine compartment are all rusty and corroded, the fancy alloy wheels that came with the truck are all blistered and the finish is peeling off, and the metal below the finish is all discolored and corroded. When I discussed the condition of the truck with the service manager and others at the dealership they say that it is "A New England thing". The snow, the sand and the salt causes rust and corrosion on vehicles. I have a '92 Celica with 215,000mi and a '00 Celica with 70,000mi and neither has a 10th of the rust the truck does!!!

The worst part is that I absolutely love the truck. When I saw the new models at the dealership, I told them that I had to have one. It took from January until April for them to find my truck for me because of the demand for the Double cab models. I really don't want to get rid of it, but if the failures and breakdowns continue, I'll be visiting the Ford or Chevy dealer! On second thought, I’ll probably get a new Tundra!

I have a 2006 Tacoma, and my compressor died at the beginning of the summer, 82000km in (50,000 miles) . Except here in Canada the compressor is 2000, plus labour. Brutal. If I bought a dodge, there would be a thousand used ones out there already! I asked about a recall today, but to no avail. I agree about the 3 years old, 2000 repair bill is ridiculous... plus i had a spring break, the dealer had never seen one break before.. But even though I was over my warranty, toyota paid half the bill which was cool.

But toyota isnt all bad.... my dad had a 97 tacoma, and the frame had rust on it, and toyota wrote him a cheque for 1.5 x the market value so they gave payed him 16500 for the truck and it was a 97 with 150.000 miles on it. They have crappy warranties, but good buy back policies. but that doesnt fix my a/c however.
