I too have experienced the same A/C problem, the A/C compressor on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4WD Doublecab pickup failed at around 36,000 miles. When we recharged the system and leak checked it, the dye that we added was leaking out of every seal and seam on the A/C compressor, were talking catastrophic failure. Because the Toyota warranty had expired (3yr/36kmi) by about 3 months, Toyota would only fix it if I was going to pay the for the complete repair (parts and labor). To add insult to injury, the company that provided the aftermarket extended warranty that they sold me for about $1,300 when I purchased the vehicle filed chapter 11 bankruptcy a year or so ago, so needless to say, my truck now has 4-65 air conditioning - roll down the 4 windows and drive 65mph!!!
Unfortunately, that is not the only problem that I have had with the truck - I have had the front brakes serviced twice already in 40k miles, the most recent the dealer wanted close to $1,000 to replace both front calipers that were totally seized, both rotors, and pads. I did the work myself for $400 in parts and a little elbow grease.
And last week the alternator seized up and when I started the engine it burned up and shredded the serpentine belt, I just finished installing a re-manufactured Denso alternator that I bought online for $200 (local parts stores wanted $440 and up for an aftermarket reman part).
The truck is now a little over 4 years old (purchased new, April of 2005) and the frame, undercarriage, and engine compartment are all rusty and corroded, the fancy alloy wheels that came with the truck are all blistered and the finish is peeling off, and the metal below the finish is all discolored and corroded. When I discussed the condition of the truck with the service manager and others at the dealership they say that it is "A New England thing". The snow, the sand and the salt causes rust and corrosion on vehicles. I have a '92 Celica with 215,000mi and a '00 Celica with 70,000mi and neither has a 10th of the rust the truck does!!!
The worst part is that I absolutely love the truck. When I saw the new models at the dealership, I told them that I had to have one. It took from January until April for them to find my truck for me because of the demand for the Double cab models. I really don't want to get rid of it, but if the failures and breakdowns continue, I'll be visiting the Ford or Chevy dealer! On second thought, I’ll probably get a new Tundra!
