Hello,
I just found this forum and registered. This will be my 1st post
OK, here’s my story (I'll try and make it brief)
I have a 2005 Tacoma I bought new in Nov.2004. Great truck and I really like it.
I've kept up on all the required service and maintenance as per the owners handbook. At 41,000 miles the check engine light pops on. Took it to the Toyota dealer, they check it out and say I need a new gas canister. $515 later I pick it up and drive it home. 2 Days later the check engine light comes on again. I take in. Guess what? same problem. Dealer says it must of been a bad NEW canister. No problem. They installed another one. No charge of course. I picked it up and drove it home.
7 Days later, guess what? The check engine light pops on again. I take it in but they (the dealer) are at a loss on what’s causing this. They call the factory and talk to there people. The dealer ask me if I can leave it for a few days until their factory Rep. comes down as he hasn't heard of this problem before. (Usually once they replace the bad canister, everything’s fine).
In the mean time the Factory Rep. recommended replacing the gas canister, the gas tank & the fuel line. The dealer did this and that worked. UNTIL NOW!
Fast forward 15 months to today. I took it in for its 60K service. As luck would have it the check engine light came on yesterday morning so it was good that I already had an appointment to do the service today. They called me and said that the check engine light error was caused by a (have you guessed?) THE INFAMOSE GAS CANISTER. Do they only last 20K miles? Is that what I have to look forward too every 20K?
I will say that the dealer has been great. They provided me with a free loaner after the 3rd visit but it’s a real pain. Is this a common occurrence or did I get a lemon?
I’d appreciate anybody else who has had a similar experience, letting me know. And also if anybody has any suggestions. (besides planning on getting it replaced every 20K miles). I’d be interested in hearing them.
Thanks for listening and your patience
Vr
