I just recently bought my toyota corolla s, its the first toyota car that i've ever owned. I absolutely love this car, its by far the best vehicle i have ever bought.. but i do have one question,, if i change my own oil, and i use the toyota oil filter.. will my warranty still be good??
I certainly hope so because that's exactly what I've done. I even took digital photos of the oil (golden brown) and oil change and emailed them to my salesman. I have the filter receipts from my dealer's Parts Dept and paid by Credit Card for another record just in case.
I don't expect to have any problems but in the highly unlikely event the engine fails during the puny 36 month warranty period, I'm sure I can convince an impartial arbitrator that it was not the result of doing my own oil changes (if the oil system is intact and the oil tests OK and was SF grade (5W-30 recommended).
It is essential that you use an oil filter with a backflow valve to minimize the time it takes to lubricate the cylinders upon startup. Startup is when most of the wear on internal engine parts occurs. Toyota USA has been very reasonable in the application of it's warranty in unusual cases. An oil related engine failure within 36,000 miles would be extremely rare. I've never seen a report of any unmodified Corolla engine failure. I'd worry more about getting struck by lightning.
