Just purchased a 2008 Sienna XLE Ltd. w/AWD. Does anybody know how to program an extra transponder key? (I believe the '07 should be the same as the '08?)

Following is an explanation and the procedures for each of the possible programming functions. The System is capable of responding to a total of 4 remotes. If you attempt to program more than 4, it will erase the first remote programmed to make room for the next.
There are four different programming commands when setting up or verifying your remote transmitter, they are:
A. Add mode, used to add a remote to your system that is not currently registered.
B. Rewrite mode, used to erase all previously registered remotes and allow you to begin again the programming process.
C. Confirmation mode, used to verify the number of remotes that are already pro-grammed in your system.
D. Prohibit mode, to prohibit all remotes from operating the door locks.
All four modes start with these instructions:
1) Make sure that the key is not in the ignition, the doors are unlocked, and the driver's door is open.
2) WITHIN 5 SECONDS, without turning, insert and remove key from the ignition twice. (leave key out)
3) WITHIN 40 SECONDS, Close and open the driver door twice. (leave door in open position)
4) Again, insert key into the ignition and remove it. This time only once. (leave key out)
5) WITHIN 40 SECONDS, Close and open the driver door twice, then close the door.
6) Insert key into the ignition and leave it in the LOCK position.

A. Add mode:
A1) Turn the key to "ON" for 1 second, then turn back to "LOCK".
A2) Remove the key.
A3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK" and 1 second later "UNLOCK" (just listen)
A4) On your remote, press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1 to 1½ seconds, then let go.
A5) On your remote, IMMEDIATELY press unlock by itself.
A6) You’ll get one of three responses:
R1) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" once. The remote is ac-cepted. If you want to program another remote, immediately proceed to step A4 with your second remote, otherwise open the driver’s door and the remote is registered.
R2) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" twice. Either you didn’t use the same remote in steps A4 and A5(not likely), or this remote was already registered.
The timing was off when you pressed the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simulta-neously and then UNLOCK by itself. Immediately press the two buttons together and the unlock by itself again. Keep trying until you get the locks to signal once that you have been successful. Then if you have another remote to program, quickly press its' buttons as before, until you hear the locks signal once. When you are finished, open and close the driver door to lock in the programming.
R3) If no response, go back to step 1 near the beginning of these instructions.

B. Rewrite mode:
B1) Turn the key to "ON" for 1 second, turn back to "LOCK" for 1 second, then back to "ON" for 1 second, and finally back to "LOCK" for 1 second
B2) Remove the key.
B3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", 1 second later "UNLOCK", 1 sec., "LOCK", 1 sec. "UNLOCK". (just listen)
B4) On your remote, press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1 to 1½ seconds, then let go.
B5) On your remote, IMMEDIATELY press unlock by itself.
B6) You’ll get one of three responses:
R1) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" once. The remote is ac-cepted. If you want to program another remote, immediately proceed to step B4, otherwise open the driver’s door and the remote is registered.
R2) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" twice. You didn’t use the same remote in steps B4 and B5(not likely).
R3) If no response, go back to step 1 near the beginning of these instructions.

C. Confirmation mode:

C1) Turn the key in 1 to "ON" and back to "LOCK" in one second intervals for a total of 3 times.
C2) Remove the key.
C3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" in 2 second intervals. (just lis-ten and count each set)
1 Set = You have 1 remote registered
2 Sets = You have 2 remotes registered
3 Sets = You have 3 remotes registered
4 Sets = You have 4 remotes registered
5 Sets = You do NOT have any remotes registered

D. Prohibit mode:
D1) Turn the key to "ON" and back to "LOCK" in one second intervals a total of 5 times.
D2) Remove the key.
D3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", 1 second later "UNLOCK" 5 times. (just listen and count each set)
D4) This will erase all previously registered remotes and cancel the wireless door lock function.

Thanks Quang! Very good instructions for a programming a remote. Would you happen (or anybody actually) have similar though instructions for programming the key? I'm needing to purchase additional spare blank transponder keys and get program it for my '07 Sienna and I'm not willing to pay the $150 per key that the dealer wants.

That is great information for programming extra remotes. However, I need to program a new key. Just for fun and games, all of the first part works exactly as you have described (doors lock, unlock, etc.) so I know we're on the right track. But what I need is the steps required for programming an extra key.
I remember doing one on my son's "04 Highlander and that required hitting the gas pedal a few times, open/closing doors, etc. 4 years later though, I'm sure the Sienna has a whole new set of hoops to jump through.
If you have any more info, it would be great. Thanks again for the reply.

I am in the same boat. I just bought a 2007 Sienna LE, and it only came with a single key and remote. I didn't realize that until the dealer delivered tha car...Grrr. Is there anyone out there that knows how to purchase/program a new key without having to pay a fortune at the dealer? eBay sellers don't seem to have keys for the 2007-2008 models yet...

Yes...I've all but given up on finding key programming instructions.

Every Toyota "tech" I have talked to says that only Toyota dealers have the ability to program them. Considering how much trouble the car manufactures got into with the courts in regards to the diag. codes, I'm thinking that there has got to be a way reprogram it without paying the dealership's 1000% markup.

I am in the same situation. I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna and I need to program an additional transponder key. I tried the 2005 instructions but did not have any luck. Does anyone have any instructions for a 2007 Sienna?

Thanks for your help!

Hello Bellboy;
I originally did this post back in November of '07- Still, NEVER found any way to program a transponder key. Plenty of info for programming a remote, but nothing for the key. So, if anyone is reading this and has any information, it would still be great help to others.

Hey guys,
Here is a little info on my experience getting a new key for my 2007 Sienna. I too was upset to learn that the used van I bought had only one key and no remotes. After much reading on various Toyota forums about the keys and their characteristics, I found the following info to be true.

The keys are refered to in various ways.....transponder keys, chipped keys, 4Ds

A non transponder key will fit the door locks and the ignition but will only cause the van to crank and not to start.

The dealer will charge you $$$ for a replacement.

Your key should have a tiny dot on it, (depending on the year) on the metal shank near the plastic head.

There is no way you can do this yourself without special equipment needed to program the key. Last time I checked, it was about $800 for the programing tool.

What I did:

Checked on ebay for a transponder key for my vehicle:
found several that were in the 29 to 39 dollar range....Make sure they are refered to as 4D chipped keys with the little dot on the shank or they will not work. Earlier models used the 4C keys without the dot so be careful.

I took my time and kept checking on ebay until one day I found someone selling an original dealership key with the part number still on the packaging. I called my local dealer and confirmed with the parts dept that the number was indeed correct for my van. I was able to buy it for $15 and then called around to several locksmiths in my area and explained the situation to them. I found a person with experience in this area and in fact owned a 06 Sienna van himself. He agreed to cut the key and program it for $35. I drove the van to his store and he looked closely at the key, cut it on his machine, then got out his equipment and checked a chart for the proper sequence and code. Then he went out to the van hooked up the programing tool to a port under the dash and inserted my old master key into the ignition. Then he started punching in a programing code into the tool and and then took the old key out and put the new key in. After a few minutes the programing was complete and I had a new key. We began to talk about our vans since his was there also and he asked me about how I got my key. I told him my story and he said I got off very cheaply since he normally gets about $50 for the blank key alone.

The remotes are a different story. While they are still specific to your trim level, they are easily programmed by a certain sequence of actions as mentioned earlier in this thread. I found many on ebay and bought and programmed two of them.
