I purchased my Rav4 Sport 4WD (6 cyls, 3.5l) in July 2007, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The rated mileage (in imperial gallons) is 26 mpg city, 37 hwy. The best I have had is 26 hwy, and at the moment, mostly city, I'm getting about 18 mpg. I forgive the 18 a bit because it's pretty cold out but the 26 mpg was summer, driving around 100kph, i.e. 60 mpg.

Does anyone out there get anywhere close to the rated mileage?

Thanks!

Hi,
Bought a 2008 Limited AWD 3.5l in Oct. Over the holiday I drove from Southern California to Bend Oregon, about 911 miles, and averaged 27 mpg US and only got 1 speeding ticket. After the first oil change, I plan to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and install a K&N air filter. This should add a little more HP and milage.

Hope this helps.

I race, I work on engines. I think the milage problem may be toyota's cloth filter in the intake tube. What is this nonsense for ? I have an 08 3.5L and that filter is on the way out as I added a K&N

I have an 07 Rav4 4cyl 2WD with 20k miles on it that is all over the place on the mileage I get. On a recent trip, I got 23.5 mpg on the way there and 30 on the way back - mostly all hwy miles. Huh?! Itraveled the same route, at the same speed, and although wind and temperature conditions were somewhat different, surely that wouldn't make that much of a difference...

I never know what to expect from gas fill to gas fill and am alternatively hacked off and pleased with the results. Anyone have any clues as to why there is such variation in my MPG?

Trout Man, was the recent trip you took uphill one way, and downhill the other? Im not trying to be funny, but could that be the case?

I avg 22mpg with mixed city/higway driving and I drive pretty fast. I run 46 PSI in my tires and a K&N Airfilter. I'd stay away from Synth Oil unless you wanna just waste money. It won't noticeably increase mileage or power.

A head wind will kill your mileage as the engine is working that much harder to maintain speed. Temperature will do the same as heat robs your engine of power and has to turn slightly faster to maintain your desired speed.

My trip was equally hilly both coming and going. Temperature was about 15 degrees colder on the way down and I was fighting a wind that quartered from the right front of the Rav. Maybe, as IRIE notes, that is at least a partial explanation.
