So this should be an easy question for everyone who owns a 22r. I have never owned a vehicle with a carb until this 1987 Toyota Pickup I just bought. What is the proper way to start this truck? Should I pump the gas a few times before starting to engage the choke? Is there an actual choke switch or button somewhere in the truck that I don't see? I know this probably sounds stupid, I am only somewhat auto inclined. I can easily do a full tune up and bodywork but I know nothing about carbs or cars that have them. Thanks a lot.

You could be onto something that relates to your other post. I once owned a 1976 Chevy truck that was cold natured. This truck would die everytime you took off unless you let it warm for a few minutes. I used to give it few pumps at start up without problem at worst it would flood. If your truck floods just let it sit for a few minutes and it will start. Don,t give up on your truck I used to have one about the same year as yours it was not cold natured, but yours could be. The engine you have is rock solid much like the 6 in my old Chevy, the truck will rot around it :) I sold the Toyota to a family member and it is still in the family, I don't recall it having a manual choke. The next time I see it I will check to make sure. My old Chevy was so cold natured that I had to let it warm up even in the summer. I loved that old Chevy the road rushing under my feet through the holes in the floor boards. I took my wife on our first date with it in 1989 even though I had a new Trans Am in the garage at home. I had to make sure she knew I was an old truck kind of guy.

I have an '82 Toyota with a 22r, the choke is automatic, and pumping the gas a little bit will help sometimes because there is something called an accelerator pump in the carb and when you pump the gas it squirts a little gas into the throttle body (kind of like a primer, also when my has a hard time starting I just turn the key off for a 20 seconds, a minute, whatever, and then try again, it usually starts right up then.
