I have an 88 4 runner with a recently rebuilt 22re motor. It runs very well- except that from time to time it will seem to lose power. Sometimes letting off the accelerator and then gradually pressing it again will help. It seems to do well if I keep it at high RPM. It has a free flwoing exhaust- a cherry bomb with a 2 1/4 " tail pipe. I have wondered if this may be part of the problem. I have a stock airfilter (intake system has not been modified or changed). Could the exhaust system be messing up the way the air flow meter is working? Any ideas? Thanks David

I replaced my intake with an after-market, replaced the plugs and used used a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner (Not all at once!). Picked up close to 6 mpg and I'd guess 12-15 HP. Cheer Charlie 87 4Runner

It does help to let off the accelerator. I have changed the fuel filter. Any other ideas? Thanks David

Hi Andrew- Thanks for the suggestions- I have put wires, plugs, cap and rotor- I did wonder if it might be the coil. I have a cherry bomb on my truck- which also has a 22re- it also has oversize valves, header and different cam- and a smaller tail pipe. The 4 runner is a stock motor- and it also has the 2 1/4" tail pipe- so that is why I thought it could have something to do with back pressure. I may go ahead and check that coil too. thanks david

I heard that was possible- right now I am working on getting it to run smoothly through the power band. I am wanting to sell it anyway. david

HI Guys I have been following this problem with interest. Firstly let me tell you all about my baby, I have a 92 4 runner limited edition V6 3.0, SR5 its done 275,000Klms been around Australia 2 times And still going strong. I had a problem for a long time with mine and every time you pushed it it went fine. But then at slower revs it missed and laboured if you took your foot of the gas it picked up. Then one day after replacing the fuel filter, air cleaner ETC. It really played up and left me stranded miles from any where just at the time I was going to see my 4 year old son for the first time after months of court battle for visitation. Any how the thing was the fuel pump packed up. Later I found out that the garage had put a injecter cleaner in the fuel line to clean the injectors and this along i Reckon with just worn out was the fuel pump. After is was replaced I had to dissconect the battery for half an hour to reset the comp and now it runs like a different truck. Not sure if this is the problem but thought I would share it with you guys if it helps. Nick From Australia

Hmm...my next guess would be TPS. These tend to get worn out when you cruise at the same speed (therefore, same throttle position). What are the conditions it happens in? Refresh our memories if you could.

someone did suggest the TPS- but I did not have a chance to check it. Often- under acceleration, the engine will seem to not have power- it does not really miss- it is just flat. Once you get the RPMs up- then it takes off and does well. Occasionally- it does not seem to get through the flat spot at all. From the advice I have received so far, it looks like I need

I checked the TPS- it checked out fairly close to spec- but there was a spot where it jumped or spiked on the ohmeter as I opened the throttle valve slowly from idle position to wide open. I am not sure if this is the whole problem. I will try to locate a tps and see if that does it. thanks david

One more thing- when we got this vehicle- all the vacuum hoses had been disconnected and I am not sure they are all in the right place- this may be contributing to the problem. The vehicles idles perfectly- so there is no vacuum leak- I tried to follow the hose routing chart on the hood- but it does not cover all that is there. I have an 88 4runner with 22re and AC- there are 3 BVSV on the valve cover and enough hoses to run from here to Texas. Any suggestions? Does anyonehve the same vehicle that could e-mail me some close up pics of where the hoses go? david

Hi there Make sure you replace your fuel filter as the injector cleaner will break up you paper filter. And then reclog your injectors at worse it will destroy your fuel pump I have had all this and it was proved this was the cause. Nick "C. McHenry"
