Can anyone please help, my 4ws light has come on, it appeared to come on when turning the car to the left, and now is on all the time. My turing circle in that direction is now reduced and i have had several near misses in car parks! I know nothing at all about the 4ws system but have heard it can get dirty and jam? can anyone give some advise on what could be the problem? I don't fancy garage prices! Cheers Andy PS. If anyone is planning an HT lead change , Magnecor leads from fensport ?54-?59 fantastic!

Ihad the same problem with mine when i got it, from my experience it is not serious, really there isnt a problem at all. The garage i got the car from are so called "import specialists" and it took them weeks to find the problem, in the end all they did was unplug all the 4ws plugs and plug them all back together. Hope this helps but if you are worried just take it to an import dealer. Dave...

There's a 4ws computer behind the passenger side rear trim panel (where the speaker is) apparently - my electrician found it when he was trying to solve my 4ws problems. Be careful, make sure you remove the trim starting at the rear and working forwards or you'll break a clip (as my garage did...) I would have assumed the plugs most likely to deteriorate would be the ones at the 4ws steering box under the car at the rear....if this is the problem. I take it you are sure the light isn't coming on as you pass through the 45 (ish) km/h switch over point? Jem

Have you read the 4ws stuff that's already in the file area? I have the entire Jap 4ws manual scanned in if you want it, it's a few MB but I could zip it and e-mail if you want

Oops. Sorry Fintan. Yeah. I'll send it all across to you. I've been on a course and still am (training to be Andys bitch or something....) I get about 20 minutes at the PC each day to do EVERYTHING so I'll get it sorted out today for you.

Like, Doh!

Hey Fintan...That information that's in the file area on egroups...you know, the 60 page photocopied manual? Well that IS the Toyota Workshop Manual!!!! Yes it's in Japanese but there's lots and lots and lots of pretty pictures. Have you not checked it out? I fixed mine from this manual and it gives a complete strip down and re-assembly.

Chances are it's not electrical anyway. There's only a couple of motors. Refresh my memory...Did we ever discover what code 32 actually was?

Jem

Thanks Jem!   Excuse me for being a little bit thick! :-)   Code: 32 System: Back up motor Diagnosis: No changing signal of steering control sensor when back up motor signal is output. ?    Steering control relay, back up motor.

Error code 32 says that the problem may be in the back-up motor system, however the back-up motor seems to work OK when the REVS 2WS button and reverse gear are selected (Causes the rear wheels to motor to the straight ahead position)

So there you have it!  How much did you say you charge an hour Jem?!!!!!

I will look again at the Jap. workshop manual and see if I can sort it.

What error code did you get with your problem.

Cheers

Fintan

Hmmm... Wonder if that could be the other motor then? I always assumed the backup motor was the motor that drove the wheels to centre but I suppose its always possible its the other motor. Have you checked it out as well?   I don't have an hourly rate as such but I do have a perfectly working 4ws GTR that you could buy ;-)

I had the same problem - mine was the backup motor, but check error codes before you rip it apart (tech info in files section on celica-4ws group page). Think mine was 22 or 32. I removed the whole gearbox setup with both motors attached and dismantled it on the bench. The brushes in the backup motor (the one with the flat sides) were knackered - I bought slightly larger ones from a local autoelectrician and they sorted it - BUT - I'd guess that anyone's chances of removing the mounting screws without shearing them in a 10+ yr old motor would be pretty small - GCSE chemistry - Fe + Al = lots of corrosion. Heat's not really an answer due to an O-ring seal and wiring insulation. I dismantled the whole heap and bust 4 of them - I had to drill out, use a stud extractor and then retap the holes. Tedious job, but it's working fine now. Good luck!

Thanks for the advise noel. I read the tech info but don't really understand how to check the codes. Could you please explain it. Sko

Use a bent paperclip to short out the TC and E1 terminals in the diagnostic block (little grey box with snap off lid in the engine compartment, just under the corner of the bonnet, passenger side). Turn on the ignition (don?t operate the starter) and read the flashes from the 4WS warning light on the dash. Reset the brain by pulling out the stop fuse (driver?s side footwell) for 10 secs.

At some stage during my investigations, I had both of these codes. 32 is backup motor and 43 is steering control sensor signal. I checked the steering control sensor which was fine but when I fixed the motor, both codes disappeared. My suggestion would be to pull the motors off and check the backup. Repair or replace seems likely. The code Go

Steering control relays (2 off) are in the engine bay close to the suspension turret, right side as you look at the engine.
