While I remember what the series looks like that the '85 ended, I don't off hand remember in particular what the bumpers look like.... but from what you wrote they must be metal (duh).

This suggestion may sound gheto, but I'm figuring at looking into this when I get to that point with my project -- paint 'em! Rough up the chrome surface real good w/ a wire bursh and some sand paper so the paint will stick, and get creative -- just don't paint them the same colour as the body or it will look like you car got a cheap paint job where not everything got covered up. I would hit it with a plain black or gray Hammerite if you want something that looks standard (if you use the high-heat stuff, it drys smooth) or use one of these newer silver or gold shiny paints that are on the market. Or like I said, get creative and do something inventive, self styled, unexpected. When you customize your car, when you make it unique, you make it yours.

Good luck, and tell us what you do when you're done, post some photos, pass on your ideas, that sort of thing.

They aren't metal. They are black plastic, like the rest of the trim pieces. I just got an '85 myself (a total cherry!) with some oxidation on the back bumper. I used some Macguire's trim touch-up a couple of times. The oxidation powders off, and you continue to wipe off black powder for a few applications, but eventually it gets to look like the rest of the black trim.

OK, so they they must have been covered from the '78 on. What's sad is that I've seen bad paint jobs where those covered bumpers have gotten painted too.
