Check the basics. Air, fuel and spark.

You said 1 in 20 it won't crank? Is the key switch going bad?

Other things to check are:
Spark: I had a coil die and cause the engine to die. It had a spark, but a yellow spark. It should be a nice hot blue spark. The yellow one was not enough to light the fuel off.
Fuel: Assuming you checked and have good pressure (I think about 30 PSI), then are the fuel injectors firing? They make a loud click noise. You may want to disconnect one and plug a LED test light in and watch for blinking as you are cranking.

Have you checked to see if it has any error code? I am unsure if the '85 had a check engine light as it was the first year for EFI, but it's work looking into. Pick up the two service manuals at the dealer. They will have step by step list of things to check if it won't start, and how to check each part in that step. At least my 93 one does.

when you say it doesnt start WHAT DO YOU REALY MEAN.

ENGINE DOESNT TURN OVER OR DOESNT RUN.

IT DOESNT RUN COLD OR HOT OR DOESNT MATTER

IF THE BASICS ARE GOOD (IGNITER FAULTY) OR TIMING CHAIN IS LOOSE.

GET BACK TO ME (I WILL START YOUR ENGINE DUDE NO PROBLEM)

GIVE ME ACCURATE STATE OF THE ENGINE

I am still not understanding.

A) The engine cranks, but it will not fire unless jumped.

B) The engine does not crank, but will crank when jumped. And it starts.

A or B?

belt ? or chain . nayho...if with a remote starter swithch jumpered frok the starter to the battery it turns over but when using the key it dosent then check the clutch switch . if its not a manual trans then the nuetral safety switch could be open.
intermittent cranking could be caused by starter relay or any of a host of other demons. hope i helped

I would replace the key switch first. I am guessing just not kicking over the starter is not it's only problem. It's not sending the right power to the ECU.
