Folks,
I've seen a HiAce camper advertised for sale here in Ireland, I haven't gone to look at it yet as I'm a bit unsure, it's a 91 2.4 D Automatic I'm sure it's a jap import.

The Automaitc gear box is putting me off, what's the life of a automatic gear box and when things do go wrong are that hard and expensive to fix? Do parts have to be ordered from Japan....

Other than that what else should I lookout for when viewing the van.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards

CJS

I'd be more concerned with the cylinder head /cooling system as the 2.4 has a bit of a rep for over heating and cracking the head in the surf and I believe its the same motor in the super custom....I've never heard of any specific weakness in the toyota autobox...unless its a fantastic deal I,d look for a 2.8 or 3ltr turbo...

A 2.4 auto will leave you disappointed.

Toyota should never have put this combination into a van. The 2.4 doesn't have much grunt as it is - and adding an auto box behind it which sucks 10% of your power is just a bad move.

The 2.4 manual is not bad - but still lacking in hill climbing ability.

I'd take Jim's advice and look round for a 2.8 or a 3 litre turbo (best of the lot).

The 2.8 is "acceptable" - particularly if it's a manual - but Jap import vans are hard to get in manual. For some reason the Japs love their automatic transmissions.
