Hello All,

I have a 91 Landcruiser. I have been having problems lately when I go to start it. I basically get nothing when I turn the key. Usually I will have to put the key in several times and turn it and eventually the engine turns over. I have cleaned the battery posts and wire conections to the starter. I then replaced the starter and sol.. Things seemed to be okay but lately the problem has started again and the frequency has picked up. This does not happen everytime just when I am in a hurry or my wife is leaving for work in the morning. :( I do hear the solenoid? click when I turn the key. I have also switched batteries with my other truck but that has not made a difference. Any ideas? Ignition switch???

Thanks, Matt (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

i hope someone can answer this as i have the same problem but with a 1998 landcruiser - i was thinking it might be in the key switch itself.

i also have a cold start problem i could use help with. when cold, the engine starts and then immediately dies. it will do this 2 or 3 times before it starts and stays running. the colder it is outside the worse it seems to be. suggestions?

thanks in advance ...

THank you for the two posts. I just had the MAJOR maintaince at 120,000 miles. As soon as I get my car home, the same problem occurs as is stated in the messages below. When you turn the key, it does not start but will start on the next turn. This occurs in the morning. However, the car willconsistantly start in the afternoon when it is warmer. AFter spending $2500 dollars for the above preventive maintianence, the dealer says it is my starter and it will cost $1000. I am furious. My car was fine before the "overhaul" which I felt some pressure to have done. Then as soon as I get my car back, this problem starts. I find it difficult to believe that something did not happen during the MAJOR tune up whne they opened the engine. The dealer will NOT assume ANY ownership that this could have happened when they were doing the above listed work. I hava offered to pay for the part but not labor.

After reading a few blogs, I am not sure that their diagnosis of the starter is correct.

If anyone has any adivce or comments I would greatly appreciate it.

I've just been having the same problems in the ute which has just been submerged by the flooding creek - seems I didn't park it high enough on the bank. Found this link which might be help, seems like it's a common problem - solenoid contacts, I'll investigate mine later this weekend.

you may be experiencing a problem I had. My problem persisted for years. I had too many aftermarket electronics drawing power from my battery during ignition. examples: Radar detector, GPS, amps for stereo.....also your AC/heater may have not been in the off position. These draw excessive power during the starting process. Removing the stuff, or having it all turned off before you start you vehicle could help. The older electrical systems in the Toyotas have had these issues historically. They did not think ahead and assume all these extra electronics that draw power from the battery.
I hope this helps.
I removed my amps from my stereo, and bought a stereo that had decent power from the head unit itself.
