I can't see an obvious way to seperate the bearing from the drive shaft. Can someone give me a hint on how to go about a centre bearing replacement please.

Hmm, good question. Normally, by the time the center bearing is shot, the bearings in the U-joints should be replaced. A drive shaft shop can do the entire thing and balance it for you.
