I purchased a 1997 toyota corolla with about 140000 miles on it.

1st issue is when I start it in the morning the engine groans a lot untill it warms up ( I guess that is normal ? ).

2nd issue is when the engine is warm, when I stop at stoplights the engine shiveres ( best I can describe it ). Basically it sounds almost like its losing power and is going to stop, but it doesnt. Happens every 2-3 seconds.

Should I get it checked out? If so what exactly should I be looking for?

first off, congratulations on your toyota purchase :)

and more to the point, with 140k a groan here and there shouldn't be a problem, just as long as it isn't making a loud clicking noise, and when it shivers, it's just the ECU dropping the RPMs to the bare minimum before it stalls out. I own a 99 corolla and it does the same thing, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about. When it really starts to bother me, I'll just leave it neutral (I drive a stick, you could drop it in neutral for a sec and try this if you drive an automatic) and tap the accelerator to give the engine a little wake up. It's not really necessary, but I do it from time to time. So again, it's nothing to worry about. Hope I helped! :)
