anyway, i know that my truck isnt four-wheel drive, but thats not gonna stop me....

but like i was saying, my friends were telling me about something called positive traction, where you put your breaks on or something and then mash it...

what are they talking about?

Why not just install a rear locker instead of messing up your brakes like that?

The locker provides maximum traction for off-road or racing use. The heavy-duty case and internals provide a dramatic increase in strength while giving 100% torque to both tires. The mechanically-operated unit works by locking while under power and unlocking when you let off the gas, allowing you to turn.

The only time you really hold the brake and then mash the gas is when you want to do a burnout, I dont see how that has much use when driving off-road.
Doesnt your PreRunner have the push-button electronic locker? I always thought that all PreRunner came with a locker, but I could be wrong...

Nope, not all PreRunners had the locking rear diff., only the ones with the TRD package, and those appeared in 1999 IIRC.

Ah, I see. It seems kinda silly that Toyota would make a truck that is marketed as an off-road 4x2 and then have it be a one-wheeled wonder.

You can't go wrong with any of the companies listed in that first link I provided. I'm not too familiar with rear lockers as to suggest which ones will suit your needs. Just contact a retailer and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help you make your decision. This may be a good one for you:

Jason Demello is a great guy, give him a call and he can hook you up.

No offense, but if you plan on doing some muddin', I think instead of spending money for a locker Id just save up and trade up to a 4x4 when you get the chance.
Locker or no locker, you arent going to go very far in the mud with a PreRunner.
The PreRunner was designed for someone who likes the looks of a 4x4, but who doesnt use 4x4 enough to want to spend the money for it and wants the better fuel economy and lower purchase price of a 4x2.

As long as you realize that, have fun. I would just hate to see someone invest a ton of money in a PreRunner thinking its going to be some badass mud truck.
At the end of the day, its still just a 4x2 and its somewhat limited in terms of what it can do off-road.
It will probably go 90% of the places that a 4x4 will go, but in certain situations you need all 4 tires spinning.
Are you familar with the concept of a Prerunner? Basically, teams that do off-road races such as Baja or Dakar have 2 trucks. 1 is their 4x4 race truck and the other is a 4x2 that is very similar to their race truck. They use the 4x4 for the actual race and they use the 4x2 to practice, or "pre run" the race course. That way, they dont tear up the race truck during practice. Im not really sure why the prerunner isnt a 4x4, perhaps to keep the cost down.
Anyways, in a nutshell, thats where the concept of a PreRunner came from. Just a little FYI.

When you get some pics, post 'em up. Id be interested to see what PreRunner can do.
Im actually considering replacing my F-150 with a regular cab PreRunner in a year or 2, but Im not sure if it could handle our snowy Wisconsin winters...
