Hi, I'm a new member! I own an '89 MR2 Supercharged, and I love it, except the a/c has never really worked that great (I'm in Texas, where it's HOT!) I had a guy look at it and he says I need a new compressor, clutch and drier, but I can't locate a compressor/clutch at any of the auto stores like O'Reilly's, etc. They told me even the factory doesn't have it (AC Delco)! Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

AUSTINGUY78758_2000@...

did your compressor put metal into the system? If so it will need a good flush or the new compressor will frag as well. You will also want to convert your system to R-134a freon. It will run you about $12.00 a pound. If you can find R-12 it will cost around $400 since the system is drained.
Auto Zone in Las Vegas can get the compressor in about two days for $170.00
The Number is 702 452-9325. see if they can help you with the parts.
Best of luck, Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your help. I have no idea if the compressor put metal into the system -- how do I find that out? I'm assuming the mechanic who will be doing the work knows about this (I HOPE!)
Auto Zone over here told me they can get the parts, but they're rebuilt. I was hoping to go with a brand new compressor/clutch by AC Delco ($400), but I can't find it anywhere.

austindude, your mechanic should be able to tell. The compressor on my 94 delta 88 literaly ate itself alive and trashed the a/c system. I ended up trading the car in beacuse it was too expensive to fix. As far as finding a NEW compressor for a 13 year old car, that may prove to be very expensive. There is an AC Delco Parts store here in town. I will ring their bell and inquire for you. But don't get your hopes up, they wanted $550.00 + tax for the compressor on that Olds I had.

Thanks, guy. I know the auto stores here are quoting a price of $400 for a new AC Delco compressor with clutch, but they just don't have any in stock. If I can't find one soon, I may just bite the bullet and go for the remanufactured parts from Auto Zone. Have you ever had problems with remanufactured parts?

Remanufactured parts are fine. Even if it was to break, two rebuilt compressors cost less than a brand new one. I work at a Ford dealer here in town and the remanufactured parts don't fail any more quickly than new ones. Bite the bullet and save some money.
Good luck, Jim
