While driving through precarious mountain passes my HiAce all of sudden after shifting to 4th gear to pass a rig went tearing up into 6000rpm's or so (I don't have a tac, but it sounded awful). I immediately turned off the engine and fortunately found a truck pullout I drifted into. After some cursing, I saw that my accelerator cable and pin were stuck in full throttle position, so that as soon as I had shifted out of gear it went out of control. I have lubed the hell out of all the moving parts of the cable, etc. and knock on wood, seems to be better, but was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem with their HiAce or has any aditional advice for me?
Thanks for the feedback.

THat happened once to my Dad on his Landcruiser - revved the living hell out of it before he could shut it off. Turns out some kind of return spring broke on the injector pump. Maybe have a close look on yours - was it super cold for something like that to snap?

Thanks for the advice. It was -35"C when I left Whitehorse. It seems to be working fine now, but I will take a closer look to make sure nothing snapped.
Cheers

IF I recall - his was a return spring on the IP. I think it broke just from fatigue (1988 era truck). It made the throttle go wide open - he had to push in the clutch and coast to the curb which caused it to go skyward on the tach. After he cleaned his pants he fixed it with a $0.25 spring from Revy. That is all I can think of other than some kind of moisture gremlin in either the linkage/cable? Hope it doesnt happen again! What kind of Hiace do you have? LH123?
Cheers,
John

Hey Schooner,

You say it was -35 when you left Whitehorse. Is your Hiace warm enough inside in that kind of weather?

Warm enough..... at - 35 I am never warm enough. I live off-grid so plugging in my HiAce is not the best option as it is a huge draw on my battery bank, and running my 6kw Generator all night to accommodate would use as much fuel as letting my HiAce run. I have looked into various methods such as inline engine heaters (would cost 1000's to install), but currently am still using my trusty length of stove pipe and a tiger torch. This method although risky does heat up the entire vehicle not just the engine. It usually takes 30 mins and I am good to go. I also ensure that all my oils are synthetic! They have a much lower freezing temp. The best alternative is to build a garage... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
As for driving in -35"C, I have always been impressed at how quickly the heater warms up, and I find that I am very comfortable. When it is -40 or colder I make it rule just to stay home.
