I've got an extended cab 4x2 with a 4 cylinder engine and an automatic. I'm happy with the price tag and the 25+ mpg and really don't want a 4x4.

Living up a steep gravel road in an area where we get some snow and ice or short patches of mud and lots of steep driveways, would the $700 price tag be worth it? I'm thinking with a little weight in the back and good tires, it'll get me most places. I do OK now, when there's no snow...

The device I'm considering is the Detroit Trutrac -- it really locks down the differential, much more so and quicker than limited slip factory installs.

Thanks for any advice!

Can't tell you if it's worth it or not. If you toss about 500 pounds of sand bags in the back, and have some good mud tires, then you might be fine. Maybe try it a season and see if you really need the locker.
