Ah I know this one! It means that the air conditioning compressor is not spinning at the correct speed for the engine revs. This boils down to either the compressor flywheel has siezed or the belt has broken or some such problem. If you have no A/C this adds up. Mine did it once about a year ago for a couple of seconds then I pressed the button a couple of times and it stopped flashing and the problem never re-occurred. Ouch! Don't run the car!! (Obvious statement #5792 :-)) If you look in the sight glass with the AC compressor running you _should_ be able to see the AC fluid foaming away. I've never done it but I read it in the Haynes manual (I think) you can use this to see if it needs topped up apparently. I just worked out last night I'd been driving with no insurance for the past 2 months 'cause I moved house. See bloody insurance companies...they've now listed the GTR in a ridiculously high insurance group. Last year I paid 414 ukp as it was classed as a GT and just marked as being a GTR in the "notes", this year they wanted 730 as it has been classified!! The worst quote was 888 the best 579....rip off or what...I could have a GT4 for that money :-( Jeremy

My Air con looks like a white froathy mixture through the viewing glass, I was told you should use the air con at least a few times a month, otherwise you will get problems with it, and they cost a fair bit to repair. O.D

Fergal, open your bonnet and you should see the viewing glass looks empty, turn your A/C on and within a few seconds you should see the FREON froathing up, if it doesn't I would say youv got somthing wrong. O.D...

I am not seeing any freon gas being pumped through, which I guess means that it isn't being pumped. There is no drop in revs when the light starts flashing, infact the revs jump up for a second. I was under the bonnet when it was turned on and I think the compressor has to have seized because there is a vibration from the compressor and the belt is making funny noices when you try to start it up. I am right in thinking that you have to get a GT-R or GT-4 compressor. Also upto yesterday when I turned the fan onto recirculate the A/C would kick in but now it doesn't even try.

Does sound like the compressor has gone... Not sure why the engine speeds up, maybe the belt just isn't as tight as mine was - when mine seized the engine _almost_ stalled and the belt burnt a bit... thought it had gone on fire the first time.

Yeah, you need a GT4 or GTR compressor, the standard celica only has Air Conditioning, we have Climate Control. Basic difference is we have an Economy setting that allows the compressor to run at half power, this means more wires going to the compressor that the standard GT doesn't have. I made that mistake already... Best just asking for a GT4 one, the guy at the breakers in Newry had heaps of 'em on a shelf. Just make sure it's clean round all the inlets (preferably taped up) and that the centre shaft turns relatively freely.
