Can anyone tell me about the AIS? The air compressor on my RA29 has no belt going to it and it appears that has not been operational for a long time. Yet the 20R still runs as well as any engine with over 200K miles. What's the deal? Do I even need the AIS? From what I can tell, it appears to be emission related. Is it possible to scrap the entire AIS and enjoy the benefits of less weight and clutter in the engine bay? Any thoughts or experience you can share will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Leek

The best thing is to get info from dealership on how to reconnect it due to tighter emission laws,or leave alone take a chance of a ticket. If it works don't fix it.?

Most people disconnected them when they seized. See if the pulley still spins, if not you can get an aftermarket one for about $50. I believe the EGR is tied in with it so you should also check that too. The whole system of VSV's and tubing is designed to operate as one. If one of those valves goes bad it can make everything run lousy not to mention it's a headache to trace which is bad.

When I used to run my 20R we got rid of the air compressor and the whole pollution setup. Everytime I was tested it passed. One precaution to take is to change the plugs before you go take the test. Yes, the engine will run fine - maybe even better without all the pollution stuff on it.
El.

Thanks El !!! That's what I needed to hear. There is an aftermarket carb in the restoration plan and I do not care to spend money on things that will not be part of the finished product. So you can bet that all of that emissions mess will come out of the car this week. Any ideas on what to do with all of the vacuum hoses coming off of the stock carb for now?

Thanks,

Leek 77 RA29
