Hello

Try not too laugh, but my RAV4 1996 did not start this morning, due to a flat battery. My fault totally as I was cleaning the car on Saturday and had the radio/Cd on all day.
So Whilst trying to start the engine this morning, the alarm whislted a couple of times. That's the only life it had in it.
So I charged the battery up for 20 mins, and voila it worked ok.
After a 15 mile drive,( to make sure it started again) , when I came to lock it with the key fob(s) x2 it did not register.

I'm able to lock the car manually with the key. takes me back to the 80's :o)

any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sorry - just another 'me too' email!

I have a 1995 Rav4 which has been unused for a while - the battery died a while back - so I turned the alarm off using the little hextype key - and removed the battery.

When it came time to installing a new battery - the car cannot be started as it appears to be immobilised. So...I tried to turn the alarm back on again....and it just screeches at 1.000,000 decibels - and can't be switched off by the key fob. The only way to stop it wailing is to switch the alarm off again - but then car stays immobilised.

Help!!!!

Is the immobilizer a factory one? If so, there should be reprogramming instructions in your manual that you can use on your remote. If it's an after-market one, check the manual for that. Good luck.

Hello - in my case, I believe the alarm system is the original.
If I try and start the car with the alarm switched off - I just get the door chimes and the hazard lights flashing (as if the battery isn't connected properly) - and on trying the ignition - I just get the engine fault light.

I know it all works, as it was running fine before I swapped the battery out...

I'm assuming that disabling the alarm also immobilises the car (which makes sense) - but can't seem to get around it!

Any ideas appreciated - sadly the cost of getting the car towed to a dealership to fix would probably be more than the car is worth!

Thanks

Darren

When I read this article, I thought it might help you reset your alarm system.

It's really curious. If the tip doesn't work, I'd like to know what you end up doing.

Thanks guys - I'm sure this will work - but I can't find that pesky reset switch for love nor money...I've looked all around the dash area to no avail.
Where do people hide these things?!

Hmmm. The only 2 places I know of are:

a. On the steering column, usually on top, little button;

b. As a pressure-switch in the engine compartment on the driver's side(when the hood closes it actually pushes down on it).

Hope this helps.

When all else fails, call a manufacturer or you may find something on Askjeeves.com about the situation...surprisingly I have found alot about my car by asking jeeves!
