Hello all, I've been offered some Ace 197 alloys (in hyperblack colour) for a very reasonable price. They're 17's. Will these go straight onto my GTR 4ws? They are currently on a 7thGen celica so the offset etc is correct. I've only got 15's on my car at the moment. Will adding 17's affect the four wheel steering at all? And do the wheels need retracking or anything when upping the size of alloys? Anything else I should know (how it affects speedo/mileometer etc). You can tell I've never changed the alloys from standard on a car can't you;) I think I'll be looking to lower the car a bit if I buy the alloys (don't want it looking really high like I've seen some other 5thgen celicas on 17's. Anyone recommend some decent but not extortionate springs? And does lowering affect the 4ws at all? While I'm here a couple of other quick questions: My GTR's an auto. I've noticed a slight noise when depressing and releasing the accelorator pedal, almost like the engine engaging. Doesn't do it all the time but does it quite a lot when driving through town at lower speeds (say around 30). Any ideas if this could be a problem developing with the auto transmission? I've got a HKS panel filter to put in the car. Should I reset the ECU for this or will it adjust itself over time? Cheers people, Steve.

Steve,   I'm currently running 17's and AVO lowering springs so no problems there !  I don't know if the Offset and PCD of the 7th Gen is the same as the 5th gen you've got.  IF the tyres are the right size then the speedo will not be out, if you increase the wheel size you reduce the tyre side wall. (I run 215/45 17's).    On the alignment note, I reckon it's always worth having it done (potholes can knock it out) especially when lowering the car as the geometry get changed.  Mine felt like a different car last time I had it done (but it was way way out ;o) )   On the transmission noise note, what sort of noise is it ????  The engine will rev slightly before the "Clutch" part engages at around 30 and out of sports mode (PWR) is it dropping down a gear when you accelerate ???  Try Putting it in 2nd pressing the "Manu" button and drive around on and off the throttle if it;s knocking it "Could be" a worn engine mount or a broken exhaust mount.   Pull the ECU fuse before fitting the HKS Filter leaving it off for about 10 minutes then go for a blast !   Best of LUck   HTH

Yup they're a straight fit, the offset is slightly different but as long as they aren't more than a 215 tyre there shouldn't be any rubbage. 215/40/17's are the usual tyre size although I'd recommend changing to 215/45/17 when replacing the tyres. The difference in speedo reading is only a couple of percent so don't worry. PI springs I think work well, you'll need the alignment checked after fitting them. Don't know anything about the auto box. You should check your ecu for error codes and reset regularly, I'd recommend disconnecting the negative battery lead for a couple of hours every so often.

Paul, Thanks for the reply! Alignment: Is this the same as tracking or another procedure? And would someone like Kwikfit be able to do this or better off going to MrT as they might know better how to align a 4ws car? Transmission: The kickdown is working when the pwr button is off. I put it in Manual and 2nd like you said and the noise seems worse then when going on and off the accelerator. The noise is kind of a knock with a hint of a squeak. Can't work out exactly where it's coming from, seems to be just behind the drivers seat underneath. I've got a mechanic coming round next Friday to change the cam belt so I'll get him to have a good look round. Do you think it could be something going in the auot-box? I once had a Nissan that the torque convertor went on, don't want another bill like that! And another noise: at low speeds on bumpy roads I get a bit of a knock from the front and rear, been told it could be anti-rollbar bushes. Are these expensive/difficult to change? Cheers for the info about the wheels (you too Al!). I'll put some pics in the gallery when they're on the car. Steve.
