I have already posted about this problem but have concluded a few things. My car will spuratically not start and have concluded its not the battery and thats all! This is definite though the past 4 times it wouldnt start I was able to get it started by tapping on the alternator while the ignition key is being turned. This is not a coincedence it starts right away when this is done and no one can figure out why? I told two mechanics what is happening and they dont see how this could be happening. Can anyone tell me how this could be happening? Honestly all you have to do is tap it lightly this is driving me crazy.

I would suggest that you replace the alternator. I had a cavalier once that had a similar problem and we just replaced it and never had any more problems. It could be a short in it or something.

The alternator shouldnt cause it to not start. As long as it has a strong charge in the battery, it should fire right up.
The alternator charges the battery and provides the electrical power, but it doesnt affect starting.

Thats why this is bothering me! Understading the alternator is not needed for starting but when tapped on it starts?

Well, I know it shouldn't affect it, but when my cavalier done that, we took it to four different mechanics and none could figure it out. Instead of continuing going from shop to shop I decided to replace the thing figuring since most are cheap.. I replaced it and viola... Its one of those "anomolies" in life that happened :)

I think Id just replace it and see what happens. If that still doesnt fix your problems you could always take the alternator back and get a refund.

So have you replaced the alternator ? I am anxious to see what happened? I do hope it fixes the problem so you don't have to mess with dealing with someone trying to figure out what it is..
