The alternator bracket bolt broke off on my 1998 4 cyl. Camry , so now there is no way to maintain or adjust belt tension. My mechanic tells me I will need to remove the engine to drill out the bolt. I am looking for less drastic work-arounds.

Thanks,

EMW

Exactly which bolt is this, the one that mounts the alternator itself? the one that mounts the adjustment bolt? or the one into the alternator? And how did it break? That's not an easy thing to do. If you give some more information, there might be some suggestions as to how to remove the bolt and repair it. Pulling the engine seems a little drastic.

i have an mr2 alternator fitted to mine, it's supposed to be a higher amp than the celica one. You will need to extend the main cable though as the mr2 plug is in a different position.

Last time I killed an alternator (make that 4 in 6 months) was due to trying to charge 2 batteries all the time and running 3 very very big current draw amps.. just a thought...   CHip
