Well, I think I found the answer. There is a switch on the transmission called the "park-neutral position switch" that indicates where the shift lever is located. It is on the lower right front of the transmission looking in the engine compartment. According to the service manual this could cause the problem. The switch on mine is covered with grime, perhaps the cable harness is dirty.
