Can you tell me if I should not be driving in the city with the overdrive on. Could that be giving be bad milage?
Most Japanese cars go into overdrive early. This is how they get their great mileage. You should drive in this position 98% of the time.
The only time you don't use overdrive is one, when you tow, (drive slower, and spare the weaker overdrive planetary section from the punishing extra tow weight) or two, you are in a stop and go environment where your speed is constantly modulating between 15 mph and +40 mph where you are constantly changing gears thus forcing excessive shifting (that's called wear and tear) of the automatic. Incidently constant speed highway driving allows the fewest number of shifts, and better cooling, hence is easier on automatics than city driving.
Note that this probably doesn't apply to the new continuously shifting variable speed automatics which work on a different desigh principle.
