Just thinking..before i sink some money and lots of time into my corolla( 82 )....I like the car a lot, but i think i like celicas a bit more and they got an attitude to them unlike the corolla.
I was thinking about getting a 79-81 square headlight celica.

I believe the 4 square headlight came to be in 1980 and 1981. Good car with lots of available options on GT package. Might be able to find 22R Carb on 81 models I believe if that is something that interst you. I think the 20 R is 80 and prior.

Hi guys!!!
My rally car is a 1980 Toyota Celica GT and yes, it has a square headlight. It only comes with 20r engine. Gt has more options like sunroof,
complete gauge package (oil,temp,tach),stereo,etc.
20 r is newer model and has a double chain.
Key in buying a car is the condition of the body and not the engine. Car with straight body are usually maintained better and easier to restore.
Most of the original 1980 GT came in Yellow.
Checkout the pictures I posted....

The question is should i switch from corolla to celica or not :)
the rolla is about as agile and has similar performance, the main thing that bugs me it gets zero respect and doesnt have much attitude, i love the car but after a while those things get to ya.
A buddy of mine got a 81' toyota truck with a 20R in it.

I have rallied in the far east an 82 Corolla and car is execellent in handling specially the 4-door. Unfortunately, they never got any respect nor looks here in the US, they were just to common. The Celica still holds the respect!!!!You probably have a 3T engine and you can modify that to be a monster, with little porting and bigger valves that can be a screamer. In fact, in the CRS rally series the current champion in my class is an older corolla with a 3T engine. If you want to be more extremes, you can change the head to become a double over head cam engine. The 3TG head will fit nicely to your block although forget being smog legal. You have to use a twin 40/45 Mikuni or webber on it. The stock comes with a twin 40
Best Corolla to find is the 84-85 GTS rear wheel drive which comes standard with a 4AGE twin cam engine similar to the MR2. You do not need to modify the engine a lot to have power and also has a rock and pinion steering.
They would range around $1,500-2500 in the market although it is hard to find.
I am also looking for one right now!!!!
Goodluck!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah..I know about the AE86 GTS's.
But for my taste, they are just too nice and i am not big on the computer controlled stuff.
Actually,I got a driver's seat for my sedan out of a GTS, very nice. I already did a few mods to the car.

So far the mods are VERY minor :
* mags put on by previous owner
* GTS corolla driver's seat
* cold air intake (involved doing some cutting and welding to the air cleaner)
*self made strut tower brace
* replaced the stock electric fan with one off a 89' Camry
* mildly ported exhaust manifold
I also am planning to hone and re-ring the engine and replace all the rod and bottom end bearings and get a camshaft mildly reground.
I already got a spare cylinder head ported/polished, surfaced and checked for cracks. also a spare intake manifold slightly ported
My other planned mods are :
2'' exhaust system that will exit Ford/Shelby style in front of the left rear wheel...probably using a cherry bomb glasspack.
Probably 14'' mags ..now i got 3 13'' mags on it and one stock purple wheel i got in a hurry after i broke the mag in an accident.
Also planning on re-doing the suspension at some point.

Sounds great !!!! Are you doing your own engine work???? Since you got a spare cylinder head and I do not know if you have already but try putting a bigger valves on it and port the air passage behind the valves. You can also port even the cast iron exhaust as big as you want and it is safe even it is bigger the the cylinder head port. The key in making a stronger engine is more "air" through it. You can buy a port and polish kit through "PAW" for around $39.00
For mags...check out the pictures I have posted, I am using an old mitsubishi Starion star rims that looks like compomotive that will fit your car. You can find them in the junkyard for $20.00 each or less size is14x6 with 4 bolt patttern. And, Iam also using a glasspack cherry bomb in my rally car and they work great!!!!
I am in Los Angeles and my sponsor is great in doing exhaust and I can hook you up if you are around here?????

I got no problem finishing up the exhaust system myself, but thanx...Also, i am located in BC Canada. I am doing my own engine work to an extent, as i dont have much experience , i dont want risking screwing up too many things, so i am going to leave the bearing and bottom end+head assembly work to the machine shop.
I did port the spare head myself,going to get the valve job done at one point and put it on when i rebuild the motor completely. I'd rather keep the valves stock size, probably going to just get new ones stock size.
