To bmtdf. No never tried that, and hopefully never will. I think the labor to do it could be exp like $800. I have a shop manual from toyota-almost a must-$50. Needed help with undoing exhaust. Find a mech on this. need ramps. Also tough is r+r timing belt. hacksaw

Sorry late response... Forgot about not being able to reply via email... Duh :D

Oh boy! It's a fun Job :) I do have a few tips for you.

First: The wiring harness is a big pain! The first MKIII Engine that I worked on, we disconnected all the wiring from all of the connectors. That was the biggest part of the job... However, since then I have learned to diconnect the main wiring harness that goes through the firewall, right above the glove compartment. You have to take a few things out inside the car, but it is MUCH easier! YOu have to take out glove compartment, and disconnect the wiring from the computer, then it will go right through the firewall.

Second: Bye a metal head gasket!!! You won't blow that one again! Do this the first time, or you will be going through this mess again in the future. These engines are prone to blowing the head gasket. You can order an HKS Head gasket from a few different places. There are different thicknesses of these gaskets, the thinnest will work fine, unless your planning on making this car more fun then it already is. :) It will cost you about $175+ for the thinnest. Just search for it on the internet... Or come back to me, I could get you one at a decent price.

Third: My recommendation is to buy the service manual from Toyota. You will probably have to have it ordered, and it will cost you about $70, but well worth it.

Glad to put in my two cents,
Timothy Babb

I have bought a few engines like that from a place in California. One for my '89 Turbo, and another for my '90 NA, also a couple for some civics... I have found that they are a great buy!!! Try finding another place to get one of these engines for that price!!!!

Well it's too late for me as far as metal head gasket-got rebuilt back with flpr already installed. Considered removing harness from firewall also but did not--now have about 32 dangeling plugs that aren't marked! Hoping for 300hp but only in 6to 7 second bursts. I'll keep the depot informed on my progress. Hacksaw
