Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

I've had a bit of a look around on the net for the correct way to bleed the fuel system in my 1984 hilux diesel ute and it has lead me here so I'm hoping that someone can help me out.

Basically, I recently inherited this old truck from my Father. It had been standing garaged for a few years. After fitting a new battery, I drove it down the road to a garage to fill it up with diesel and guess what...it ran out of fuel. Got it towed back up the road but now it won't start and the battery is on the charger as we speak. I know that Diesel engines need a bleed if run dry. The little short-stroke primer pump located near the fuel filter seems pretty hopeless and I must have pumped that thing a thousand times but can't pressurise the system!

So my question is this... What is the best way to draw fuel back up from the tank, prime the whole system and get this puppy back on the road?

Thanks in advance,

Okay, here's an update!!!

It's Saturday morning here in Australia and I have the system primed. The little short-stroke pump located near the fuel filters is working correctly and pressurising the fuel lines as expected. On the top of the diesel pump, there is a 17mm hex bolt with "OUT" stamped on the top. I have cracked this nut slightly and primed the system until there is no air, only clear diesel, coming from the union. The little pump is now stiff to operate, so I believe that finally the system is correctly primed.

Then I had the GF crank the engine over for 10 seconds whilst I individually cracked each injector union to bleed the injector lines but there is no diesel flow or air flow or anything coming out from the top of the injector olives. On the fuel pump itself, there is a 12mm bolt located in the middle of the injector pump output cluster. Guess what? I undid this bolt to see if anything seeped out and it is completely dry, furthermore, I have completely undone each injector at each olive on the pump output cluster and there is no Diesel in any of the injector lines!!!!

So, I'm a bit perplexed. Is this a separate issue, do I need to manually prime each injector line with Diesel to make this puppy work or is it something else altogether.

I have downloaded and examined a diagram of the Robert Bosch type VE Diesel injection pump SEE HERE >> http://www.cs.rochester.edu/~jag/vw/engine/fi/injpump.html << which this vehicle has but I can't ascertain the problem so I'm hoping that someone here can help me out. The cost of towing the utility to the Diesel mechanics and for them to 'have a look' is going to be about $300-, so I'm definitely keen to get it sorted out by myself.

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Check my post for replies and I'll check yours and we'll see if we can't get this resolved.
