The brakes on my '94 4WD are RAZOR SHARP!
I dare not stand on the pedal - I'd go through the windscreen!
New pads in the front, drums on the back, bleed the entire system and fill with fresh brake fluid.
NB! Don't use aftermarket brake pads. Always use the genuine TOYOTA ones.
I found out the hard way.
I had to replace the front pads a while ago (due to one pad being mis-aligned on a previous installation - see below) and I used some "Silverline" brake pads from the local car parts supplier.
These were touted on the box as being "low dusting".
After two weeks of average driving, the front wheels were covered in brown dust.
I put up with it for a couple of months then went and bought some genuine TOYOTA ones.
Put them in, front wheels are clean as and NO dusting.
Re the mis-aligned front pad -
After installing new pads at one stage, I noticed the brakes seemed soft and not as efficient.
I suspected that the system simply needed bleeding but never seemed to find the time to do it. Eventually the van needed a warrant check and they said "Your brakes are imbalanced".
I took it home and bled the system right through. It still seemed soft though so I bled it again. No real change.
I took it back for a re-check (they have a dynamic brake testing machine) and they said "No, they are still imbalanced".
Then the guy got down underneath in the pit and said "come and have a look at this" so I went down and I could see, looking at the inside of the brake caliper, that the shoe was sitting incorrectly.
I took the van home, took the shoes out, and one of them had obviously not seated properly when it had been fitted, or it had somehow jumped out of the caliper and had been wearing on about a 15º angle. Needless to say that pad was stuffed.
A new set of pads cured the problem.
