Drew:

Whether you have locking hubs or not the early ninety pickups have different style assemblies than say a regular passenger car with front wheel drive. There isn't really a major difference in the locking and non-locking hubs for toyota. If you have locking hubs, remove the locking cap. They are 10mm bolts about 1/2 inch long. behing that you will see a spring and another shiny brass colored 10 mm bolt. remove the spring and keep that with the locking cap. remove the 10mm bolt at the end of the axle. Next remove the 6 or 8 can't remember nuts that are staring you right in the face. There will be some retainers that will keep that shroud from coming off behind the nuts. If you're lucky you can slide a screwdriver in where the gap is and pull them out. If not you will notice two screw hole threads on the shroud. place two bolts in the holes and slowly turn those in (righty tighty) each one evenly without the use of an impact gun (could break 'em) that slowly pulls the shroud away from the rotor and loosens up the retainers. Now screw them back out and that should allow you to pull the reatainers off and remove the shroud. You will then see a series of large thin nuts, washers and keepers. If you don't have a socket for the large skinny nuts you can tap them with a hammer and screw driver to remove them. So first bend back the keeper flags on the washers so that you can turn the nuts. Take them off. there should be two nuts, a washer and two flagged washers. After you remove these the rotor assembly will come right off. Assuming of course that you have already taken your calliper off. Inside the rotor will be an outer bearing (looking right at you when you take the rotor off, careful that this doesn't fall out and to the ground) and an inner bearing (behind closest to the guard shroud for the rotor. Both of those need to be removed and repacked if they are okay. If they aren't okay ONLY BUY TOYOTA BEARINGS. Everything else is crap!!!! Inspect the racers that the bearing run against. To remove the inner bearing you will need to pull the inner seal with a seal puller. Replace that seal with a new toyota seal. To put back reverse this order. Good Luck Let me know if I can be of any more help

Cake walk. Especially compared to a Accord. That truly does suck. Your 4runner should be a 30 minute/side job.

Do your self a favor and get your self some Brembo rotors. The stock rotors will warp again in no time. I did this last November to my '97 and it was a piece of cake to change out on your own. About the only special tool you'll need is a torque wrench able to read about 90 ft lbs. While your at it, replace the front pads with new OEM units. And better still, bleed them puppies. Do a Google search for the rotors, prices vary. I think I paid under $45 for each rotor. Hope this helps. Anthony Message: 6

Brembo rotors in general. From what I understand, Brembo does not make a cross drilled and/or slotted rotor. That work is done by a third party. Save your money, and buy a 6 pack of your favorite libation to enjoy when your finished. Anthony Message: 2
