Hey yall I just bought a brand new 1997 tacoma 2wd reg cab swb with 94,000 miles. I also have a 92 with all the same specs. The 97 is only getting about 23 mpg my 92 with 261,000 gets 25 or better. The 97 is running a little rough because it's been setting up but whats the deal with that. I've already changed fuel filter and have been running some fuel additives. Tell me what yalls get.

What do you mean when you say "it's been setting up"?

I'm wondering if I might need to drop the gas tank. Just can't figure out what's making it run so rough.

Could be it needs fresh gas. Had my '97 since '99 and it's always been a bit dissapointing fuel useage wise, around 24 highway averaging 60MPH

I would get some fresh gas and alot of fuel additives. Get some fuel injector cleaner and gas treatment. Or just get a bottle of that Fuel system cleaner. Then just run it. The more you run it the better its going to run until it gets good and cleaned out. Get new air filter, plugs, and wires. Also change the oil. If its been sitting for a year, i'm sure you need all these things.

Id start with some fresh gas, add in some fuel system cleaner and then replace the sparkplugs, sparkplugs wires, distributor cap and rotor.
Even 25 mpg is pretty good for that truck.
Correct me if Im wrong, but the '92 had a 22R-E in it, but the '97 had the DOHC 2.4L 4-banger. The '97 should be putting out a little more hp than the '92, so you could expect lower fuel economy.
Even at 25 mpg, thats pretty good fuel economy for that truck.
