Hey Mike

Allen answered the question but I want to add that TSB are internal notices that dealers can use which tell them how to diagnose a problem. Sometimes, TSB work is covered under the warranty similar to a "recall" if the buyer pushes the issue that the TSB covers. TSB's are made when the dealership notices a reoccuring problem or there was a difficult and lengthly diagnosis and repair on a particular model. Anyway this TSB got me four much better tires. I can't describe to you the difference.

Re: K&N filter - I'm tempted to get one, but how bad is the maintenance on it?

Chris aka Fake

Hi Chris (Fake):

Thanks for the TSB definitons. Appreciate it.

The K&N air filter only needs to be re-oiled every 25-50,000 miles (depending on conditions...you will never need to replace it). Actually, the dirtier it gets, the more efficient it becomes. (The filthiest K&N still outperforms a brand new paper filter.) Expect to pay upwards of $50 for the filter with the re-oil kits around $10. FYI.

-Michael
CA "01 Prius"

p.s. My local Toyota dealer here in SoCal sells them in the parts dept.

Mike,

Are you using the direct replacement K&N filter or the more expensive and larger external one? If so where does it fit and does it create noise?

Ken

Hi Ken:

I am using the factory replacement K&N, NOT the air induction K&N system. It fits perfectly in the Toyota OEM air filter box on the top left side of the engine. No it does not create any noticeable noise. But it does create more power! K&N claims 4 more horses on the Prius. FYI.

-Michael
CA "01 Prius"

Hi again Fake:

Yep, use K&N replacement air filters on 2 Toyotas (1999 V-6 Camry XLE & 2001 Prius), 2 Hondas (1995 Civic EX and 1996 Accord EX-both V-Tec 4 cyl) and a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis V-8. It's a great product and well worth the investment. After all, one of the two easiest methods to get more performance out of a stock engine is to allow it to breathe easier. (The other is higher octane fuel.)

-Michael
CA "01 Prius"

p.s. Adding a Tornado in conjuction with the K&N is an awesome combo! Cost is about $130 for both. FYI.
