I read in a newspaper column last year that the Toyota Camry is the number car picked out by car thieves.

Does anyone here have a car alarm or an extra car alarm added to their security? We are thinking about adding one since we live in a very large city when car theft seems very popular.

I would get a car alarm and a steering wheel lock.

I would recommend having an "immobilizer" installed. Check with your insurance company as many of them give you insurance discounts if approved immobilizers are installed.

I have one.

Pongo Tip #42: If your vehicle was attempted to be stolen, but they didn't succeed, ensure there is evidence that they actually tried to turn the ignition on (not just entry-damage). If no ignition damage exists...make it exist.

This is to avoid the deductible as the insurance company will eliminate the deductible in case of "theft attempt" as opposed to break-and-entry.

I would advise some kind alarm or detterent as in my town many are stolen for a number of different reasons. Cops tell me they strip them for parts. I don't know if that is try, but thats what they tell me. Neighbor had his broke into.

gfs...that is funny (not really...but what luck, right). So what happens if you already get the insurance money, a new car, and it is returned down the road, lol.

The way I keep my car from getting stolen is the standard fare: The Club, parking in safe places, etc. But if I am in a questionable location, what I do is take the ignition fuse with me. The car won't start without it. Someone said it in a letter to Car and Driver a while back.

On a related note, my dad's 87 Camry was stolen twice and found nearby the next day, and before that he had a 1980 Corona Wagon that, when found, had the baby seat removed, and spanish-language radio stations programmed in.

Where I am from the car most stolen is the Honda Civic. I would recommend a viper alarm, that is the one I have on my car and it has worked great for me. If you live downtown in a larger city I would put a steering lock device on as well, like the club for example.
