Greeting

Right now I am a sad Toyota Camary owner. I have a 1997 camry 4cy AT with 130000 miles on it and the transmission just failed on me. Will not go into any gear. I thought i would have no major problems with this car until about 200000 or so. I changed tranny fluid regularly. Anyone out there have this happen. Thoughts on remanuactured, used, or rebuilt. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Sadly

Fred

Hello, I have a 1997 Camry, same engine and trans, I'm curious what color was the transmission fluid when you changed it each time? Mine runs smooth and shifts great , but the color of the fluid is dark, and Its suppose to be the clear red like when it was put in.

Guys, don't simply change the tranny fluid. Take it to a tranny shop every 2 years and have it "pumped" out.

I've learned the hardway myself, and many people think that by simple dropping the fluid and putting in new stuff (and filter) is all they need to do. In reality, most of the metal shavings still remain inside the torque-converter. Only by using the shops special pumping machine can you truly clean your tranny. And a 2 year cycle is more than adequate, unless you're towing constantly, then "maybe" yearly.

130,000 mile tranny failure is not THAT uncommon. My advice is to get it rebuilt. US$1500 or about CAN$2000 is reasonable. Get it fixed. It will last quite a while, and don't worry.
